There are monuments in Volgograd that survived the Battle of Stalingrad. Im talking about one of them

I never thought that after the Great Patriotic War in Stalingrad (#Volgograd since 1961) something could have survived. Archival films and photographic documents tell us that the city was almost completely wiped off the face of the earth, enterprises, houses, cultural and art objects were destroyed, almost the entire civilian population was killed.

And yet, in the fire of the Stalingrad fire, four monuments survived, which still exist in Volgograd.

One of them is a monument to the Hero of the Soviet Union pilot Viktor Stepanovich Kholzunov.

V.S. Kholzunov (1905 — 1939) — a native of the city of Tsaritsyn (from 1925 # Stalingrad). Member of the Civil War and the Spanish War, during which he skillfully commanded his unit and showed personal courage and heroism. For which he was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

In 1939, pilot Kholzunov died while testing a new aircraft. Buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

Immediately after his death on the central embankment in Stalingrad, V.S. A monument was erected to Kholzunov, which was destined for a difficult fate.

During the Battle of Stalingrad, the monument was in the very epicenter of hostilities for the central part of the city.

Its location indicates how close the Germans came to the Volga. It was here that they built one of the strongholds with a system of communications and trenches.

Despite the fact that the pedestal on which the monument stood was destroyed, the sculpture itself did not suffer during the hostilities, as if Kholzunov himself stood up to defend his native city. For some time she lay on her side, and after the war she just stood on the ground.

Currently there is a park around the monument to pilot V. Kholzunova is considered one of the favorites among Volgograd residents and guests of the city. It is still customary here to make appointments and just relax in the shade of spreading trees.
