I go to the grave of the general, whose ashes are buried here, on slopes of the main height of Russia.
His name is Mikhail Stepanovich Shumilov (1895-1975). His life and service are inextricably linked with Stalingrad (from 1961 # Volgograd) and the Battle of Stalingrad.
The contribution made by Mikhail Stepanovich with the soldiers of his 64th Army to the victory under Stalingrad is probably difficult to assess.
In gratitude and for military services, streets and schools in the city were named after him and his army, monuments and busts were erected.
It was Lieutenant General M. WITH. Shumilov conducted the first interrogation of the commander of the 6th German Army, Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus, after he surrendered to the Red Army, thus ending the bloodiest battle on earth.
According to the will, the urn with the ashes of Mikhail Stepanovich was buried on the slopes of the Mamayev Kurgan along with the soldiers who defended Stalingrad and remained here forever.
I I have already been here in winter to celebrate the 78th anniversary of the Victory in the Battle of Stalingrad. The tombstone of General Shumilov was covered with snow, but even then it was clear that it was crumbling.

I sincerely hope that the leadership of the memorial to the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad on the Mamayev Kurgan will find funds to restore the tombstone of the Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel-General Mikhail Stepanovich Shumilov. At least by May 9 …
By the way, literally 30 km from here, a monument erected on the site of the auxiliary command command post of the 64th Army.
